Bags For Belongings, Help Us Help Foster Kids! January 16th, 5-7pm

Kiwanis Launches Bags for Belongings Program

Saranac Lake Kiwanis is embarking on a new program in 2020 that will focus on the needs of the Franklin County Foster Care Program and the young people within it. Kiwanis President, Craig Stevens expressed that “we’re hoping that this program can become a regular addition to our core activities, such as the Bike Rodeo, supplying free dictionaries to every third-grader, and books to all kindergarteners.”

On average, a child in foster care in the US moves 2-3 times a year. Kiwanis is teaming up with the Franklin County Division of Family Affairs and the organization Together We Rise to ensure that no child in our community has to pack their belongings in a garbage bag as they move to a new home. Saranac Lake Kiwanis has committed $800 for the initial purchase of duffel bags to be provided to children entering foster care.

Kiwanians are asking for your help during the first two weeks in 2020 to provide our area youth in foster care some of the comforts they deserve. Event organizer, Andrea Audi, says that the choice to start the new year with this program was not an accident. “Many of us were blessed this holiday with at least a few extra stocking stuffers that we could contribute.”

You can participate in one of three ways.  Help us by meeting us half way toward our next purchase. Go to and donate online to meet our $400 goal so that we can continue to supply these bags.

Help by dropping off any of the following items to a Community Bank Location in Saranac Lake before Jan. 16th. For the youngest: pacifiers, sippy cups, bibs, diapers, wipes are the most needed. Examples of donations suitable for all ages are books, notebooks, coloring books, flashlights, earbuds, travel games, refillable water bottles, blankets, hats, socks, gloves and mittens. Children in foster care range from infants to older teenagers, so items for boys and girls of all ages are welcome.  It is asked that items are new or only very gently used. Would your business or agency like to donate some items? Kiwanis can make pick-ups.

Lastly, join The Kiwanis Club of Saranac Lake for a meaningful, fun and tasty evening at the Fiddlehead Bistro to kick off this program. The event will be held Thursday, January 16th from 5-7pm. You can find out more about the Foster Care Unit, Kiwanis, and lend a few minutes to help pack the bags there. Tickets are $20 per person at the door and include one drink (a beer or wine) and hors d’oeuvres. RSVP to is appreciated.
